Noel-Baker Academy, part of the L.E.A.D. Academy Trust, became a hub of innovation and discovery when it hosted IET Faraday’s annual Challenge Day at the end of January.

The event brought together Year 8 students from six local Derbyshire schools; Noel-Baker Academy and Da Vinci Academy, which are both part of L.E.A.D. Academy Trust, Chellaston Academy, The Bemrose School, Saint Benedict Catholic Voluntary Academy and Landau Forte College. Throughout the day, the students collaborated on engaging hands-on activities designed to ignite curiosity, foster teamwork and enhance learning beyond the classroom.

Six pupils were selected from each participating school to take part in the STEM challenge at Noel-Baker Academy, where details of the competition remained a closely guarded secret to ensure there was no unfair advantage. Activities were designed to inspire curiosity and strengthen students’ STEM knowledge, whilst challenging the investigative skills they have been developing in their science lessons. The winners of the challenge, Chellaston Academy, will advance to a further competition with the chance to win £1,000 to spend on school equipment.

Students collaborated to tackle real-world challenges, sharpening their critical thinking and fostering both creativity and teamwork. The event provided an engaging and inclusive setting, bringing together schools from across the area, whilst celebrating students’ innovation, highlighting potential career paths in STEM and showcasing the real-world application of their studies.

Ben, a Year 8 student at Noel-Baker Academy, said:

“The IET Faraday Challenge was a great experience because I learnt life skills that I can use in my career one day, and I met so many new people. It was a great way to connect with people from different schools – even if they were our opponents!”

Sheila Emery, Science Teacher, Careers Team member and STEM Coordinator at Noel-Baker Academy, said:

“At Noel-Baker Academy, we believe that STEM education is key to preparing our students for the future. This event was about making STEM subjects accessible and exciting, and creating dynamic learning opportunities that go beyond traditional classroom settings.

“By working alongside their peers from other schools, students not only develop essential skills in science and technology but also learn the value of teamwork and communication, which are crucial for any career path they choose”.

Kate Richardson, Headteacher at Noel-Baker Academy, added:

“We were delighted to host this incredible opportunity for students to come together and immerse themselves in STEM learning. Events like this not only spark a lifelong passion for discovery but also equip our young people with the skills and mindset they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. By collaborating with other schools, we’ve strengthened our sense of community and shared purpose that will benefit our students long into the future”.
